Boxing Up Scary Thoughts

Anxiety-Triggered Sleep Problems in Children
Fear is a natural reaction to any stimulus that could pose a threat to one’s safety. Anxiety, on the other hand, is an emotion that is entirely thought-based. Studies conducted with children show that anxiety problems are often related to frightening thoughts or night terrors. In such cases, children may refuse to go into their own room, show signs of sadness, ask permission to sleep with their parents, or request the use of assistive devices, such as night lights, because of the darkness.
This is usually a temporary phase, but it can be prolonged if there is more to it than just a fear of the dark. Understanding your child’s anxiety early is important to prevent future risk factors.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and its innovative interventions can be used to assess and treat a variety of anxiety symptoms in children. Therapeutic play, art activities, storytelling, and other creative interventions can be used as key components of CBT when working with children.
A Play Therapy Method: The Scare Box Metaphor
The scare box metaphor, a technique often used in play therapy, and the information shared by the mother in the story where she too experienced fear face to face, not only shows empathy, but also demonstrates that difficulties can be overcome together.
The Scary Thoughts of Panda Cotta is a story published by Kidly that can serve as a guide for anxiety and fear of sleep.
The story also contains a mindfulness practice that will help deal with scary thoughts.
If we apply this idea of fear in the story to cognitive behavioral therapy before bed;

However, after parents practice mindfulness in the fear box with their child, the following changes occur in the child’s cognition:
When therapy is supported by stories, this can help the sleep process achieve the desired quality. The story Panda Cotta’s Terrible Thoughts draws the child’s attention to dysfunctional frightening thoughts in an empathetic way. Then it moves on to the creation of functional ideas. Accompanied by breathing exercises, the child sends all frightening thoughts to the fear box, experiencing a technique for dealing with fears, as well as a much more comfortable sleep.
Particularly in cases of fear that begin at a young age, parental involvement, support and encouragement in the process is of great importance in reaching a solution. The story of Panda Cotta invites the child to learn about anxiety through the eyes of a sweet and lovable character, while at the same time demonstrating that there is always hope for change.
