Kakao Pay Announces Strategic Investment in the US Securities Firm ‘Siebert Financial Corp.’

“Enhanced User Benefits with Expansion of Global Business”

- Kakao Pay announced an agreement to purchase 19.9% of Siebert by securing new shares of Siebert, a publicly traded financial services firm with more than 55 years of experience in the U.S. financial markets 

- Kakao Pay will acquire an additional 31.1% of Siebert, for a total of 51% ownership of Siebert, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval

[2023.04.27] Kakao Pay is enhancing user benefits, setting for a full-scale expansion of its global business by making a strategic investment in the US-based Securities firm Siebert Financial Corp. (Nasdaq: SIEB) (“Siebert”).

Kakao Pay announced an agreement to purchase a 19.9% stake of Siebert of newly issued shares for approximately $17 million on 27 April 2023. Subject to regulatory and shareholder approval, Kakao Pay will acquire an additional 31.1% of Siebert of newly issued shares. After the close of the second transaction, Kakao Pay will become the largest shareholder of the company with a total of 51% ownership of Siebert, and the Gebbia family will continue to hold significant ownership.

Siebert is a U.S.-based financial company that has been a member of the NYSE since 1967. Through its subsidiaries, Siebert provides a full range of brokerage and financial advisory services including securities brokerage, investment advisory, corporate stock plan administration solutions, etc. Siebert has extended its financial business in the U.S. market by obtaining a number of licenses.

This investment is expected to improve the user experience and benefits of Kakao Pay users who invest in foreign stocks as well. Kakao Pay Securities, the subsidiary of Kakao Pay, will elevate user convenience by providing extended U.S. securities trading hours, service, and more. By collaborating with Siebert, Kakao Pay will secure its price competitiveness in U.S. securities transaction fees with various benefits and services in the MTS. Kakao Pay Securities is currently offering the lowest transaction fee (0.05%) for U.S. stock online trading in Korea.

Kakao Pay will expand its global business by targeting overseas markets with its financial business model based on its advanced technology as well. The company is planning to create a new overseas stock trading solution that combines the user-centric MTS of Kakao Pay Securities with Siebert’s brokerage infrastructure, which could be expanded to foreign fintech companies including those in Southeast Asia. Siebert will also work with Kakao Pay to discover new profit expansion opportunities and advance the user experience, establishing a bridgehead for Kakao Pay to enter the global financial industry.
