Frequently Asked Questions
Is it mandatory?
The ITV (vehicle inspection) is mandatory. The registration date of your vehicle determines whether it is mandatory and the deadlines for carrying out the technical inspection. For example, if you have just bought a new car, you will not be required to have the first technical inspection until it is four years old.
How often is the ITV required by law?
The first inspection and the frequency of subsequent inspections vary depending on the type of vehicle and its age (according to the registration date shown on the vehicle registration document).
Once the first technical inspection has been carried out, the date of the next one can be found on the ITV sticker placed on the windshield after passing the inspection.
What are non-periodic inspections? In addition to the periodic inspections specified in the previous section, your vehicle may undergo a non-periodic inspection, for example, in any of the following cases:
Voluntary Vehicle Inspection (ITV)
Requested by the vehicle owner.
Vehicle Inspection (ITV) for Damaged Vehicles
With significant damage to its structure or safety features.
Modification Inspection (ITV)
Major Modifications
Vehicle Inspections for Issuance or Correction of the Vehicle Registration Document (ITV Data Sheet)
For example, to request a duplicate ITV card.
Change of Vehicle Use
Change of vehicle use
Where is the ITV carried out?
The ITV is carried out at authorized centers. To find out where to have your vehicle inspected in your province and the telephone numbers of the center you should go to, click here.
Is it a free procedure?
No. The ITV (vehicle inspection) has a cost that varies depending on the Autonomous Community and the type of vehicle being inspected.
What happens if I don't have a valid ITV certificate and the authorities stop me?
You could be fined. Since 2010, the DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) no longer suspends your driver's license for not having a valid ITV certificate, although you could still be fined. You will also have 10 days to get your vehicle inspected. If you fail the inspection within that time, your vehicle could be deemed unusable.
What do I need to do to get my ITV inspected?
Before going for your ITV inspection, you must request an appointment, which can be done by phone or online (online appointments are not available at all ITV centers). Some centers even offer appointment booking via Twitter. Check the website of the center where you decide to have your inspection and be sure to note the date, time, and location.
To find out where to get your vehicle inspected in your province and the phone numbers of the centers you should go to, click here. It doesn't matter where the vehicle is registered or where the driver lives. You are free to choose the center that best suits you for your inspection.
In some centers, if the number of vehicles allows, they will attend to you without an appointment, but we recommend that you request one as a general rule.
What do I do once I have an appointment?
Go to the assigned center on the day and time of your appointment. When you go to the chosen inspection center, it is important that you bring all the necessary and valid documentation.
What documents should I bring on the day of my appointment?
Vehicle registration document
Vehicle insurance
Technical data sheet (ITV card) if your vehicle has had a previous inspection.
In some Autonomous Communities, you will also need the ID of the person taking the vehicle for inspection.
What is checked during the inspection?
After verifying your documentation, your vehicle will be checked in various aspects and functionalities (lights, signals, tires, brakes, exhaust emissions, bodywork, mirrors, etc.) to ensure it complies with current safety and environmental protection regulations.
The type of inspection will differ depending on the type of vehicle and its use. For example, the MOT test for a moped is not the same as for a truck used for transporting hazardous goods.
What might happen after the inspection?
If you pass the inspection, you will receive the MOT certificate and a sticker to place in a visible location on your vehicle (check with your inspection center if you have any questions about placement). For cars, it must be placed in the upper right corner of the windshield.
It is also possible that your vehicle will fail the inspection. In this case, you will be informed of the necessary repairs and given a new date to return to the center for the MOT test, which must be completed within a maximum of two months.
It will be mandatory to carry the vehicle inspection certificate in your car, along with the rest of your mandatory documentation.
