You will then be asked which level you want to achieve and your main goal for learning this language. You can choose from the following:

- Work

Challenge myself

You can now set up your Study Plan. This is to tell Busuu when you’d like to learn. You can choose how many days a week, which days, how many minutes each day and the level you want to achieve. The flexibility of the app is a huge benefit as it can be easily worked into busy schedules, without impacting everyday life or your language learning progress. So, like, when I was using it, they were throwing things at me so fast and unexpectedly that I couldn't keep up. It got really tough for me, you know? I had to redo the lessons a bunch of times or sometimes I just gave up until the end-of-unit review. And those ads! Ugh, they popped up every 2 seconds, and they showed more frequently as you progressed. I get they need to make money, but it was getting way too boring and repetitive with all those interruptions. The one thing I did appreciate though is that, unlike Duolingo, this app actually teaches you practical stuff that's useful for beginners. Like, it covers common phrases, basic questions, greetings, and goodbyes - things you'd actually find handy in real life.

I've been using this app and it's been really fun. Today, I found a little issue. I'm currently learning Japanese, and while practicing on the app, I discovered something interesting. There's this symbol in the top right corner of the screen that can switch the text between hiragana and kanji. So, I thought it would be cool to keep it in kanji mode to get more familiar with them. But then, during one of the matching exercises, I could only match two out of three correctly. I had to switch back to hiragana to get the last one right. It was for the lesson called "Elementary A2 Creating nouns from verbs."

I'm currently using Busuu to learn Japanese. I find the lessons are well-structured and don't overwhelm me with too many new topics or vocabulary at once. However, I do think there are too many basic words in the review section that keep getting repeated, and it's hard to save specific words for later practice. It would be helpful if the review vocabulary was organized into separate categories so I could focus on specific subjects more easily. Also, having a Kanji review option would be beneficial. Overall, these are just minor issues, and I believe in using multiple sources for learning. In my opinion, Busuu is great for laying down the fundamentals of Japanese.

So far, my experience with it has been pretty good. You do need to subscribe to access everything, but it's worth it. The platform really excels in covering grammar and offers a variety of learning methods such as audio, speaking, visuals, fill-in-the-blank, and open responses. The audio feature works best when I use my own voice, although sometimes I have to pronounce things differently from the audio to get the correct answer. I particularly enjoy the feature where community members help grade some of the response questions.
